Editor’s note: The following essay was the winning entry in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest co-sponosred by Diocese of Richmond’s Office of Catholic Schools and Office for Black Catholics. It was written by Alessandra Paras, a 10th grader at Roanoke Catholic School.
The contest, now in its 15th year, was open to all sixth graders in the Grand Rapids Public School district and asked students to read an excerpt from MLK’s speech “The Other America.” Aligning with the district’s new standardized testing, the sixth graders were given three prompts to develop an essay in response to the speech.
The winners of the essay contests are Troy Lamont Briggs, Jr., seventh grade winner and Alexandria Geery, 12th grade winner. Taylor-Carrillo said every student in kindergarten, first, second and third grades participated in the contest as the contest is part of the teachers curriculum.
